On any given day the 7mag will outperform the 308. More retained energy and less wind drift in a fair comparison. The 7mag does not kick bad unless you're recoil sensitive, it's rather easy to load accurate ammo for, even though the 308 is less picky and shoots nearly anything, and the barrel should have adequate lifespan for a hunting rifle.
This compares favorably to 150 grain and 180 grain .308″ bullets which have sectional densities of .226 and .271 respectively. At the same time, while the 7mm Rem Mag tops out with 175 grain bullets, the .300 Win Mag is capable of firing 200 grain, 208 grain, and 220 grain bullets with sectional densities of .301, .313, and .331 respectively.
So our core group has hunted Elk together for 40 years, they are all 10 to 12 years younger then me. In that group we have three 7mm Remington.
